Just 100 metres off the historic Trial Bay Gaol near South West Rocks, Bait Reef is a small but lively patch reef roughly 25 m wide by 40 m long. A very easy shore entry from a sloping rock shelf leads to a shallow reef (max 9 m) that you can circumnavigate in 15 minutes. The reef crest rises to about 4 m at its centre, where a maze of gullies, ridges and small holes harbours moray eels, mosaic eels, bullseyes, bream and black reef leatherjackets. Eastern shovelnosed rays often lie camouflaged on the sandy edges. Protected within a sanctuary zone, the bay offers calm, clear conditions when the swell is from the south — ideal for beginner snorkellers and new divers wanting a relaxing, fish-filled exploration with historic gaol views above the waterline.

Getting in
Drive to Trial Bay Gaol (South West Rocks, NSW). Go around through the camping area to the back of the gaol. Park near the north-western corner and walk towards the water. Look for a very large sloping rock in line with the western end of the gaol — this is the entry and exit point. Swim straight out on a bearing of approximately 270° for less than 5 minutes to reach the reef.
Park near the north-western corner of Trial Bay Gaol within the camping area.
Access via Trial Bay Gaol/Arakoon National Park may require a NSW National Parks entry fee.
