Bait Reef is a mid-shelf outer reef in the Whitsundays, renowned for its iconic 'Stepping Stones' — a series of coral bommies rising from the sandy seabed, blanketed in kaleidoscopic hard and soft corals. Snorkellers drift over shallow lagoon gardens teeming with fish, while the reef's outer walls plummet into deeper water, drawing pelagic visitors. Protected moorings at Gary's Lagoon offer calm, easy snorkelling for all levels, making this one of the most celebrated day-trip destinations on the Great Barrier Reef.

Low risk: Boat traffic
Boat traffic from tour operators and liveaboard vessels near mooring points. Snorkellers should be aware of vessel movements.
