The spot

Community-maintained

Community contribution: submitted by Daniel

Tucked beneath the vibrant red clay cliffs of Ardrossan on the northeast coast of Yorke Peninsula, this small fishing jetty offers a surprisingly rich snorkelling experience. Less than two hours from Adelaide, the jetty's pylons are encrusted with pink, orange, purple and yellow soft corals and sponges, creating a colourful underwater maze. Water depths of 1–6 metres reveal sand and blue swimmer crabs, dusky morwongs, moonlighters, zebra fish, goat fish, magpie perch, curious sweep, and even cow fish. Stingrays and fiddler rays are often attracted by scraps from local fishermen, while a big school of long-finned pike frequents the end of the jetty. Easy stairs access and calm conditions make this a fantastic entry-level spot.

Know before you go

Logged by the community, confirmed by mods

  • Moderate risk: Easterly winds

Winds from the east can spoil visibility and create choppy surface conditions; southerly winds are also unfavourable. Westerly or northerly winds are best.

  • Low risk: Outgoing tide current

Tidal movement can create moderate currents, especially around the jetty pylons. Snorkel at the top of the tide or around low tide slack to avoid being swept.

  • Low risk: Fishing activity

The jetty is a popular fishing spot. Snorkelers should be aware of fishing lines, hooks, and discarded gear near the pylons.

  • Low risk: Long walk across sand at low tide

When the tide is well out, there is a long walk across exposed sand to reach the water; use the jetty stairs instead.

  • Low risk: Tidal currents

Moderate tidal movement can create currents. Best snorkelled at low tide (no current) or at the top of high tide to avoid strong flow.

  • Low risk: Shallow sandbar at low tide

When the tide is well out there is a long walk across exposed sand to reach the water. Use the jetty stairs about three-quarters of the way down.

  • Low risk: Tidal current at high tide

Tidal movement can create currents near the jetty; best to snorkel at the top of high tide or around low tide to avoid strong flow.

  • Low risk: Long walk over sand at low tide

When the tide is out, a long walk across exposed sand is required to reach the water, but steps on the jetty provide an alternative entry.
