The spot

Carved from a bluestone quarry abandoned in 1899 after an underground spring flooded the pits, the Blue and Green Pools at Angourie are stunning freshwater swimming holes nestled within a coastal headland. The Blue Pool is a large, deep spring-fed basin with clear blue water, while the Green Pool is an 80-metre-long lap pool beneath a towering bluestone cliff. Sand and pebble bottoms, sheer rock walls, and natural spring-fed clarity make these former quarry pits feel like wild, hidden lagoons. The short 100-metre walk from the car park passes remnants of old railway tracks used to cart the stone, adding a touch of local history.

Know before you go

Logged by the community, confirmed by mods

  • High risk: Large surf / swell

Angourie Point is a famous wave break; large swells create dangerous conditions for snorkelers.

  • High risk: Cliff jumping

Popular cliff jumping from surrounding rock faces can cause serious injury if landing incorrectly or colliding with submerged ledges.

  • High risk: Cliff jumping danger

Jumping or diving from rock ledges around the Green Pool is extremely dangerous and has resulted in fatalities. Depth varies and submerged hazards may exist.

  • Moderate risk: Rip currents

Strong rip currents are common along this coastline; beaches are not patrolled by lifeguards.

  • Moderate risk: Rocky reef and boulders

The point is lined with boulders and submerged reef – sharp rocks present a hazard, especially in swells.

  • Moderate risk: Deep water

The Blue Pool is extremely deep — the former quarry drops off sharply with no shallow shelf, posing a risk for weak swimmers.

  • Moderate risk: Cliff jumps

Popular jumping ledges up to 3 metres high around the pool; injuries can occur from misjudged landings or submerged hazards.

  • Moderate risk: Immediate deep water

The pool drops to over 2 metres depth right from the entry step — no shallow gradual entry, so non-swimmers should take care.

  • Moderate risk: Blue-green algae blooms

Can occur in warmer months; warning signs are posted at the car park prohibiting entry when present.

  • Moderate risk: No lifeguard

An unpatrolled swimming and snorkelling area with no rescue equipment on site.

  • Moderate risk: Immediately deep water

Both pools drop off quickly from the entry point; non-swimmers and weak swimmers should use flotation devices.

  • Moderate risk: Cliff jump hazard

A 3-metre jump ledge is popular but hazardous — deep water below, but risk of injury from poor landing or submerged objects.

  • Moderate risk: Cliff edge / drop-off

The pool sits on a headland with steep drop-offs nearby — stay aware around the perimeter.

  • Low risk: Changing tides

Tidal movements affect water depth and exposed rocks around the point and Blue Pool area.

  • Low risk: Limited mobile reception

Mobile phone reception is poor to non-existent in the Angourie precinct of Yuraygir National Park, hampering emergency calls.

  • Low risk: Slippery rocks

The Blue Pool and surrounding rock platforms have smooth, wet surfaces that become extremely slippery, especially near the water's edge.

  • Low risk: Ocean swell surge

The adjacent ocean pool can experience sudden swell surges and strong currents during rough seas, especially in winter months.

  • Low risk: Steep walking track

The access path from the carpark to the pools is uneven and steep in sections, requiring care, especially when wet.

  • Low risk: Immediate deep drop-off

The pool is deep (2m+) right from the edge with no shallow entry — swimmers must be confident in deep water.
