Ammo Jetty is a popular shore-entry dive and snorkel spot near Woodman Point on the mainland coast near Fremantle, not on Rottnest Island itself. The old jetty pylons are encrusted with marine growth, attracting a dense concentration of macro life. Snorkelers can explore the shallow, sheltered waters (average depth 6m) where the jetty structure acts as an artificial reef. It's renowned among underwater photographers for the sheer variety of small critters hiding among the pylons — hermit crabs, baby eels, octopus and the occasional friendly sea lion. The site offers an excellent, easy-access introduction to Western Australian marine life without needing a boat.

Moderate risk: Strong currents
Ocean currents can be strong around the offshore reef, especially near cave entrances and swim-throughs. Requires good swimming ability.
Moderate risk: Boat traffic
Located offshore in open water, boat traffic from dive charter vessels and ferries is common in the area.
Moderate risk: Storm damage / temporary closure
The jetty has been closed to public access due to storm damage and is undergoing replacement. Verify current access status.
Low risk: Limited visibility in caves
Cave and swim-through interiors can be dark with reduced visibility; a torch is recommended to navigate safely.
Low risk: Deep drop-offs
The reef drops to 18 m depth with sudden depth changes near cave systems, which can disorient snorkelers not accustomed to deeper water.
Low risk: Small boat traffic
The jetty area may see occasional boat and kayak traffic near the pylons. Stay aware of your surroundings.
Low risk: Weathered jetty pylons
Submerged old pylons and debris can be sharp or snag fins/swimwear. Swim carefully and avoid touching the structure.
Low risk: Jetty structure hazards
Old jetty pylons and debris may have sharp edges, barnacles, or snag points particularly after storm damage.
Low risk: Boating traffic
The area can have boat and ferry traffic near the jetty. Snorkelers should stay aware and use a surface marker.

Getting in
Ammo Jetty is located at Woodman Point, south of Fremantle, approximately a 20-minute drive from the Perth CBD. From Cockburn Road, turn into Woodman Point Road and follow it to the public boat ramp area. The jetty is adjacent to the boat ramp. Note: This is NOT on Rottnest Island itself — it's on the mainland near the Woodman Point boat ramp.
Parking is available at the Woodman Point Public Boat Ramp carpark. This is a popular boat ramp so spaces fill early on weekends and public holidays.
No entry fee for snorkeling. Rottnest Island entry fees apply if visiting the island separately.
