Agincourt Reef sits at the outer ribbon of the Great Barrier Reef, approximately 45 km from Port Douglas, North QLD. This pristine reef system features steep ribbon reefs rising from deep water — with a sheltered inner lagoon on one side and a dramatic outer wall dropping into the Coral Sea on the other. Snorkellers float above vibrant coral gardens in crystal-clear water (visibility regularly exceeding 20 metres), encountering enormous sea turtles, reef sharks, and schools of trevally. The 'The Rocks' site is known for its dramatic bommies and strong coral formations, making it one of the most rewarding snorkel destinations on the outer reef.

Moderate risk: Tidal currents on outer reef wall
Strong currents can occur along the outer reef edge, particularly when tidal flows accelerate between ribbon reef channels. Snorkellers are advised to stay within marked safe zones.
Moderate risk: Stinger season (marine stingers)
Box jellyfish (Chironex fleckeri) and Irukandji may be present in warmer months, primarily November to May. Reef-safe stinger suits are provided or recommended.
Low risk: Open ocean swell and boat motion
The ocean crossing from Port Douglas to the outer reef can be rough. Motion sickness is common, especially in the dry season trade winds (June–September).
Low risk: Sharp coral formations
Coral cuts and scrapes are possible when snorkelling over shallow bommies or when entering/exiting the water near the pontoon. Maintain buoyancy and avoid touching coral.
Low risk: Intense tropical sun exposure
Sun exposure is extreme on the open water. UV levels are high year-round in tropical North QLD. Reef-safe sunscreen, hats, and rash guards are essential.
