The Town of 1770 (Seventeen Seventy) is the closest mainland access point to the magnificent Southern Great Barrier Reef, sitting at the very southern tip of the reef system. From here, boat tours depart to the Bunker Group islands — most famously Lady Musgrave Island, a coral cay with a large protected lagoon that is one of the Great Barrier Reef's largest natural swimming pools. Snorkellers explore calm, shallow lagoon waters (typically 2–8 m deep) over pristine coral bommies and staghorn beds, swimming alongside green turtles, manta rays, and abundant reef fish. The spot is also the gateway to Fitzroy Reef, Masthead Island, and North West Island, making it the premier jumping-off point for world-class reef snorkelling in the southern GBR.

Know before you go

Logged by the community, confirmed by mods

  • Moderate risk: Marine stingers (jellyfish)

Stinger (jellyfish) season runs November to May in the southern Great Barrier Reef. Marine stingers including box jellyfish may be present. Wearing a stinger suit is recommended.

  • Low risk: Outgoing tide current

The lagoon entrance channels at Fitzroy Reef and other reef sites can have strong tidal currents, especially during outgoing tides. Snorkellers should stay with guided groups and be aware of tidal flow.

  • Low risk: Low tide reef exposure

The reef is partially exposed at low tide, particularly around cay edges. Snorkellers can be stranded on exposed reef flats if not aware of tide times.

  • Low risk: Sun exposure

The subtropical sun is intense year-round. Reflection off the water increases UV exposure. Sun protection including reef-safe sunscreen, hat, and rash guard is essential.
