Ten Mile Lagoon is a striking reef-protected lagoon located about 16 km west of Esperance, named for its roughly ten-mile length. A natural barrier reef sits 20–30 metres offshore, creating a calm, shallow, sheltered pool ideal for leisurely snorkelling. The lagoon's crystal-clear turquoise waters reveal sandy bottoms, patches of seagrass, and rocky outcrops that attract small reef fish. Backed by white sand and coastal scrub, it offers a serene, uncrowded alternative to Esperance's more famous beaches. The reef acts as a natural breakwater, keeping wave action minimal and making it particularly suitable for families and less experienced snorkellers seeking a gentle introduction to the Esperance coastline.

Know before you go

Logged by the community, confirmed by mods

  • Moderate risk: General beach hazard rating 8/10

BeachSafe rates this beach 8/10 for general hazards. Conditions can change with swell and weather; exercise caution.

  • Moderate risk: Strong offshore winds

Prevailing south-westerly winds can create choppy conditions and make swimming back to shore difficult.

  • Moderate risk: Shark presence

Like all Esperance waters, sharks including bronze whalers and occasional great whites are known to frequent the area. Swim in groups and stay close to shore.

  • Low risk: Beachrock ledges

Near-continuous shore-parallel beachrock runs along much of the beach. Stay close to shore and clear of these submerged rock formations when swimming or snorkelling.

  • Low risk: Low-tide reef exposure

At very low tides, the protective reef may become exposed, and the lagoon depth decreases significantly — watch footing to avoid cuts on reef or rock.

  • Low risk: Reef cuts and scrapes

Shallow reef 20-30m offshore can cause cuts if snorkellers venture too close at low tide.

  • Low risk: Beach rock / uneven footing

Patches of beachrock along the shoreline can be slippery and sharp underfoot.
